NOTICE OF PROPOSED PROPERTY TAX INCREASE

The City of Calhoun, Georgia today announces its intention to reduce the 2026 millage rate to 2.25 mills from the 2025 millage rate of 3.50 mills—a reduction of 1.25 mills

When the total digest of taxable property is prepared, Georgia law requires that a rollback millage rate must be computed that will produce the same total revenue on the current year’s digest that last year’s millage rate would have produced had no reassessments occurred. Therefore, since the rollback rate is lower than the current millage rate in order to set the millage rate of 2.25 –state law requires that this must be advertised as a property tax increase. Therefore, before the Mayor and Council of the City of Calhoun, Georgia set a final millage rate, Georgia law requires three public hearings to be held to allow the public an opportunity to express their opinions on the increase.

On November 4, 2025, City of Calhoun voters approved a 1% FLOST (Floating Local Option Sales Tax) All money collected from FLOST is, by law, restricted to reducing property tax for property owners on the City property taxes. Late revisions to the state law have now allowed the 5-month collection period in 2026 to be implemented for tax relief for the 2026 tax year. FLOST collections for January 2026-May 2026 will result in a roll-back of 1.472 mills. Without the FLOST revenue the City millage rate for 2026 would have been 3.722 mills. Also to be expected for 2026 is an $18,000 Homeowner Tax Relief Grant (HTRG) applied to 2026 tax bills for homestead properties.

All concerned citizens are invited to the public hearings on this tax increase to be held on September 28, 2026, at 11:30 A.M. and 6:30 P.M. at the Depot Community Room 109 South King Street. There will also be a third public hearing at the Depot Community Room, 109 South King Street, on October 12, 2026, at 6:30 P.M.
