Community Development – Building Inspector

The City of Calhoun is now accepting applications for a Building Inspector in the Community Development department.

Work Performed:

Review applications for permits for compliance with all related state and local codes, rules, regulations, and ordinances which apply to the City of Calhoun.  Responsible for daily inspection of residential housing, commercial building and industrial projects.  Will also work in the following areas:  Soil and erosion control, flood plain management, grading, storm water management, zoning, land use and other environmental planning areas.  Provide information and assistance to private individuals, companies, developers and state and local officials regarding building codes and ordinances.  Work with local, state and federal agencies as required.  Responsible for complete and concise record keeping concerning inspections and filing reports with the Chief Building Inspector or other agencies as required.

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent and minimum of five years’ experience in construction or construction related field; preferred bachelor’s degree in engineering, architecture, or other related field with a minimum of three years’ experience in construction related fields.  Ability to communicate effectively both verbal and written and ability to work effectively with the public and local, state and federal agencies.

Ability to read and interpret construction plans and blueprints. Computer literate. Valid Georgia driver’s license.  Obtain within two years of employment knowledge of International Building Code, Standard Building Code, Standard Plumbing, National Electric Code, Mechanical, Gas, Fire Prevention, Existing Buildings, Housing, Swimming Pool, Amusement Device and Unsafe Building Abatement Codes and City of Calhoun Zoning Ordinance.

Also obtain within two years of employment inspector certification. Ability to do field inspections involving squatting, bending, kneeling, reaching and twisting and occasional crawling, ladder, stair and scaffold climbing.

Water/Sewer Construction Laborer

Qualifications are high school diploma or equivalent; valid driver’s license and must be able to obtain CDL within six months; ability to do manual labor such as digging and cleaning out ditches to install new water and sewer lines; make water and sewer taps; install water meters; lay pipe; operate jack hammer and air drill. Assistant Finance Director

The City of Calhoun is now accepting applications for an Assistant Finance Director in the Finance department.

Job Summary

This position is responsible for assisting the Director of Finance in managing the core financial functions and administration for all departments within the City of Calhoun.

Essential Functions
  • Assists in managing the financial recording and reporting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidelines. Assists with the annual audit, including related workpapers and reports.
  • Assists in the preparation of financials statements, budgetary reports, economic analysis and other status reports as required.
  • Assists with the creation of materials for presentations to public officials, staff and other groups and participate in the presentations as necessary to convey financial issues and concerns as the need dictates.
  • Assist in developing, reviewing, implementing and documenting department procedures and practices under the direction of the Director of Finance.
  • Coordinate with the City’s Senior Accountants who work with Department Heads on the City’s annual budget to annually develop it, maintain records of budget transfers, oversee budget amendments, ensure accuracy of budget data in the system and assist in publishing the completed budget.
  • Monitor and manage budgetary issues throughout the fiscal year.
Supervisory and Management Responsibility
  • This position works directly with the staff in the Finance Department and the Purchasing Department, assisting them as needed. Occasionally assistance is required with balancing utility accounts receivable, pooled cash and utility deposits.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in governmental accounting
  • Proficient in Excel
  • Valid Georgia driver’s license
