Notice is hereby given that, in accordance with O.C.G.A. 21-2-132 and O.C.G.A. 21-2-9 (b) a municipal general election will be held for the City of Calhoun on Tuesday, November 7, 2017, at the Calhoun Recreation Department located at 601 River Street, Calhoun, Georgia from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

Qualifying for the municipal general election shall be held at the Calhoun City Hall located at 226 S. Wall Street, Calhoun, Georgia, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, August 21, 2017 and ending at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2017.  Those positions that are up for election are:

Council Post #3-Incumbent Matt Barton-Qualifying Fee $252.00
Council Post #4-Incumbent David Hammond-Qualifying Fee $252.00

School Board Post #1-Incumbent Alvin Long-Qualifying Fee $1.00
School Board Post #2-Incumbent Rhoda Washington-Qualifying Fee $1.00
School Board Post #3-Incumbent D. David Scoggins-Qualifying Fee $1.00

Early voting will begin and absentee ballots will be available at the Gordon County Board of Elections and Voter Registration Office on Monday, October 16, 2017.  Office hours are Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  The last day to cast your ballot early or to request an absentee ballot is Friday, November 3, 2017.  The Gordon County Board of Elections Office is located in the Gordon County Government Plaza, 215 North Wall Street, Calhoun, Georgia.

The last day to register to vote for the municipal general election is Tuesday, October 10, 2017.  Registration is available at the Gordon County Board of Elections Office, City Hall or other locations as required by Georgia Law.

Pursuant to O.C.G.A. 21-2-131(1)(A), the following qualifying fees were set by the City of Calhoun City Council during the regular City Council meeting of January 9th, 2017.

Qualifying for the offices listed above will be held at City Hall located at 226 South Wall Street, beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, August 21, 2017 and will end at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, August 25, 2017.

Public Hearing Notice

The Mayor and Council of the City of Calhoun will hold a public hearing for an ordinance change to amend certain articles, divisions and sections of Part II, Chapter 14: Animals. The proposed ordinance change seeks to provide measures for the human and ethical treatment of certain classifications of animals, either owned or possessed by municipal residents, or otherwise found or located within the city limits. The public hearing will be held at the Depot Community Room, 109 South King Street, Calhoun, GA on July 24, 2017, at 7:00 pm.  The public is invited to attend.  A copy of the proposed ordinance is available online:

2018 SPLOST Referendum Meeting

The Mayor and Council of the City of Calhoun will attend a joint meeting with Gordon County and the cities of Fairmount, Plainville, and Resaca on Wednesday, July 5th, at 9:00 AM. The meeting will be held in the Gordon County Administrator’s Office at 201 North Wall Street. This is a required meeting to discuss possible projects for inclusion in the 2018 SPLOST Referendum which will be placed on the November 7, 2017 ballot.

Public Notice – Level 1 Drought

Due to the persistent drought, the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) has revised the current drought response to a Level 1 Drought declaration for Georgia (see Map). No additional watering restrictions have been issued above those already in place for the past several years. The City of Calhoun Water System does not have any type of water supply shortage!

Outdoor watering as per the existing guidelines may continue under the Level 1 declaration. The existing outdoor restrictions and the Georgia Drought Response Map can be found below:
