Telecommunications Department

Mission Statement

The department is dedicated to service and the continued prosperity of the community.

Under the supervision of the Calhoun Electric System, the Telecommunications System took form during the first half of 1997. The SONET (Synchronous Optic Network) backbone of more than 20 miles of 36 Fiber cable was installed. Additionally, two sub-rings have been installed which serve schools and government with advanced communication and data services, distance learning technology, and eventually broadcast capability. The operation is called Calnet and the system has received statewide certification through the Georgia Public Service Commission.

Since its inception in 1997, the Calhoun Telecommunications System has developed from concept to a fully functioning state-of-the-art synchronous optical network. The entire City of Calhoun telephone and data networks are driven by the high speed, high capacity digital optic systems. Calhoun Telecommunications or "Calnet" commercially provides high band-width, 100-mb Ethernet, lease fiber and point-to-point services. Calhoun's newly developed long distance and Internet access should provide the remaining ingredients to a world-class communication solution, advanced quality of life, and an excellent business environment.
